Easy Movie Duets by Dan Coates

Several years ago I came across a book from Alfred Music, which is a fun way to play short movie music duets. The book is arranged by Dan Coates, which is designed for Early Intermediate, with equal levels of duet parts. The Primo and Secondo both get the melody throughout most of the duets. The list of songs are Star Wars Theme, My Heart Will Go On, Once Upon a Dream, How Can I Live and a few more. I'm going to share three YouTubes so far.

The first one is My Heart Will Go On from the Titanic, sung by Celine Dion. The melody is throughout the Primo, yet the Secondo is filled with beautiful legato rocking back and forth chording and arpeggios. The song is written in the key of G Major, yet incorporates several accidentals in the song. Coates provides equal balances of dynamics, crescendos and decrescendos. Be aware of the 1st, 2nd Endings and Coda. This is a song worth teaching, hopefully playing with your students.

Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz is another great song in the collection, worth tecahing and performing. The song has equal times were the melody is in both parts. The song is written in the key of C, yet includes many accidentals, various dynamics and the Secondo moves around from the Bass Clef to the Treble Clef. This is a gorgeous arrangement.

The last one for now is Once Upon a Dream from Sleeping Beauty, one of the shorter arrangments of two pages. The melody is spread out in both duet parts, yet the song is written with a faster tempo. Coates creates a waltz feel with quarter, half, dotted half notes and some eighth notes, which could be an "opportunity" yet possible for the Primo part. The song is written in the key of F Major, yet he incorporates many accidentals throughout the song. Hope you enjoy this YouTube.

What are some of your favorite movie songs? Would like to know. Thanks for your support. Blessings.
