Want to keep this blog brief, yet wanted to share how I taught lessons the past two weeks while still dealing with laryngitis. I've been drinking hot tea and water, trying not to talk too much, taking vitamins, and resting. My voice, the week of October 28th-November 2nd, was raspy and unclear. I was only able to sing a few notes at a time, and as the week progressed into this week, my chest voice was returning. It's not as strong, yet it's a bit better. Currently, my voice is struggling with notes close to Middle C and higher. I'm hoping to recover soon.
Teaching tips:
Student-led vocal warm-ups: sirens, lip trills, breathing, and diaphragm exercises. Review previous vocal techniques that they know and play their part on the piano.
Play previous piano and acting games students know and let them teach.
Have water or hot tea available in your studio.
Try to give yourself time to not talk in between lessons.
Communicate effectively with parents and students through texts and emails about how you feel and the expectations of the lessons.
Make it fun for everyone.
I would like to know your experience with laryngitis. Also, between us, please don't Doctor Google the effects of singers and performers who completely lose their voices for good because of laryngitis. That doesn't help your situation. LOL. Stay positive, be honest with yourself and others, and ask for help/support/good thoughts and prayers. I would certainly appreciate your good thoughts and prayers. Thanks for your support. Blessings.
