In January of 2025 Wichita, Kansas experienced many major Winter Storms to the point that we missed a lot of school and we were "stuck at home". During the last few days before the weather got warmer and we returned back to school, I started a piano solo and, finally this week was able to get it complete. I'm really excited about this solo called Walk in the Dark, a title my wife came up with when she first heard the song. I love the title.
Walk in the Dark is written in D Harmonic minor, where I created a theme that makes you feel like someone is experiencing being in a dark place, not sure where they are going. The form is ABAC with a brief A theme at the end. The B theme reflects primarily parallel 5ths in the Treble Clef, yet not always. The Bass Clef is playing a 4-note descending part of a scale. The second A Theme is an octave higher. The C theme contains arpeggiated major or minor 9th chords at an adagio tempo. I implement Cesuras at the end of the A and C Themes, with a short part of the motive at the end.
This Late Elementary solo is perfect for those wanting to learn something a bit creepy and errie. Here is the link:

How much composing do you create in a year? How long does it usually take? I would love to hear if you shared this selection with your students. Thanks for your support. Blessings.
